 That degree of certainty is all you need in your everyday life. It’s the same degree of certainty accepted as proof by courtrooms and scientific laboratories across the world every day. And that’s the degree of certainty we can have that no gods of any interest or value exist. Whether you want to call that ‘proof’ or not is up to you; but it’s more than enough to convince any reasonable person without prior bias. This is one of the most important questions that theists need to consider and is one that frequently gets ignored, glossed over or completely misrepresented. Thousands of years ago, the answer was easy. We could detect gods because, according to the stories written about them, they supposedly appeared in front of people all the time, worked all sorts of miracles, occasionally procreated with people, smote people left and right, etc. Even the God of the Christian Bible is described as regularly interacting with his “chosen people” including talking to prophets, performing miracles upon request, helping his people win great battles (as long as their opponents didn’t have iron chariots, of course[1]), etc.

After awhile, though, people started noticing that the gods described in all those ancient stories weren’t actually directly manifesting themselves to us anymore. As a result, many of those gods simply ceased to exist in the minds of men and became relegated to the realm of mythology. People realized that those gods never actually existed and that the stories written about them were pure fantasy. But some gods were harder to abandon than others. And, faced with a complete and utter lack of tangible evidence to support a belief in those gods, believers started redefining the God they claimed to believe in to make it easier to ̶r̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶a̶l̶i̶z̶e̶ ̶j̶u̶s̶t̶i̶f̶y̶ explain why they are wholly unable to present any direct, tangible or objective evidence that this God actually exists. Suddenly, their God is no longer a being that interacts with humanity in a physical way, but is actually a being of “pure spirit” (whatever the heck that means) which exists “outside of time and space” (whatever the heck that means) and never ever reveals himself to us in anyway whatsoever because to do so would, of course, somehow destroy our free will and negate our ability to have faith in unseen things. Because, of course, as everybody knows, without faith, God is nothing.[2]
