 Outside of court, there’s a variety of different workplace cultures. Larger, more conservative business-oriented firms on the east coast are probably going to expect suits be worn all the time, whereas smaller, boutique firms in California working with Silicon Valley start-ups might go the other direction and allow for business casual or even casual casual dress. I will say that the one immutable rule is that if you’re appearing in federal court, you wear a suit (not a sport coat or blazer, either, but a proper suit) in a conservative pattern/color. Federal judges do not mess around, and federal court is not the place to express your sartorial flair.

One of my personal rules for appearing in a courtroom is, “If the judge can see your elbows, you’re dressed too informally.” I would never appear in a courtroom wearing anything other than a business suit, and they don’t make short-sleeved business suits. Outside of the courtroom, there are contexts in which I might wear business casual, even to meet with a client. But not in the courtroom. Anything that will make the judge and or jury rule against them and their client. I live in Eugene, Oregon, home of the University of Oregon Ducks. Duck colors are green and yellow. Most of the judges are University of Oregon Law alumni. Washington Huskies’ color is purple. I never wear purple to court. Not a tie or shirt. Certainly not a purple jacket. No purple pens, notebooks, file folders. No purple. Orange is a close second, because that’s Oregon State. I don’t own much orange because I’m a “winter” so that’s not an issue.
